Why we should care about the royal baby

As I write this, Britain’s Duchess Catherine is in labor with the baby who will someday sit on the throne. If feedback on social media is any indication, many people are frustrated that this story is dominating the news. I don’t get it. I can’t remember a time when the news wasn’t full of crime, sadness, tragedy, grief, or anger. News of the royal baby seems like it would be a welcome change.

I understand that when the 24-hour news media gets their claws in story, we can get tired of it because of the constant discussion. That happens with all big stories.

This is the birth of someone who will be in the history books, not because they committed an act of terrorism, not because they caused turmoil in the economy, but because they were born. That is rare. Arguably, that is news. Big news.
