In a society that often bombards us with unrealistic beauty standards and pressures to attain the “perfect” body, it’s no wonder many people struggle with their self-esteem and body image. While the body positivity movement has gained momentum in recent years, there’s another approach gaining recognition: body neutrality. Let’s explore what body neutrality is, why it’s important, and how you can incorporate it into your life to foster self-acceptance and a healthier relationship with your body.

What is Body Neutrality?

Body neutrality is a concept that encourages individuals to shift their focus from how their bodies look to what their bodies can do and how they feel. Unlike the body positivity movement, which emphasizes loving and celebrating your body regardless of its appearance, body neutrality takes a more neutral stance. It suggests that it’s okay not to love your body unconditionally (what a concept!) but rather to acknowledge and accept it without judgment. Body positivity may be difficult to attain as you work through the complicated feelings of existing in a world that places a lot of emphasis on how you look—body neutrality helps bridge that gap.

What Can a Body Neutral Stance Do?

  1. Reducing Obsession with Appearance: Constantly obsessing over your appearance can lead to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Body neutrality offers a way to step back from this obsession and focus on more meaningful aspects of life. No matter what your body looks like, it works tirelessly to keep you alive—which is arguably more important than how thin you are or how many wrinkles you have.
  2. Less Pressure to Conform: What is considered “beauty” is ultimately a construct that is constantly changing which makes the pressure to conform to these unrealistic standards overwhelming. Body neutrality frees you from this pressure, allowing you to define your self-worth on your own terms and not what is currently popular.
  3. Improved Mental Health: Shifting your perspective toward body neutrality can lead to improved mental health. It promotes self-acceptance and reduces negative self-talk and self-criticism. Deciding not to hate your body and how it looks and simply respecting and appreciating yourself is a powerful and profound change in perspective.
  4. Encouraging Healthier Habits: When you focus on what your body can do and how it feels, you’re more likely to engage in healthy habits like exercise and proper nutrition for the sake of physical and mental well-being rather than appearance. You may now eat for the pleasure of it and enjoy the energy it provides instead of hyperfocusing on eating the “right” amount of calories (whatever that means) or following the newest fad diet that actually has minimal health benefits upon closer inspection.
  5. Enhanced Self-Esteem: Accepting your body as it is, without judgment, can boost self-esteem and self-confidence. You begin to see yourself as more than just a physical appearance and appreciate yourself for what you are—a human being who is just trying to live their life and do their best.

How to Embrace Body Neutrality

  1. Mindful Self-Reflection: Take time to reflect on your thoughts and feelings about your body. Recognize negative self-talk and challenge it by focusing on what your body can do rather than how it looks. To begin this process, you could even start journaling and write down a few things that your body did for you today (your hands allowed you to give your dog a belly rub, and your eyes were able to read your favorite book!).
  2. Shift Your Perspective: Change the way you perceive your body. This can be a long and difficult process because we are so hard-wired to be self-critical but ask yourself: what is it doing for you to constantly compare yourself to others? Instead of criticizing it for its flaws, appreciate it for its resilience, strength, and the experiences it has enabled you to have. Be patient as you start to change the way you think about yourself, the goal is just to move from self-criticism and judgement to acceptance. Self-love may even follow later!
  3. Practice Gratitude: Regularly express gratitude for your body’s abilities. Whether it’s walking, dancing, simply breathing or tasting your favorite food, acknowledging these functions can foster a more positive relationship with your body. All bodies are born with different abilities and abilities can even change throughout life as we live it, but we all deserve basic respect and recognition for getting to where we are today.
  4. Limit Exposure to Negative Media: Be mindful of the media you consume. Unfollow or mute accounts that promote unrealistic beauty standards and instead seek out content that promotes and celebrates body diversity and self-acceptance. It can be incredibly harmful to constantly be exposed to very limited body types on social media. The reality is: there is no one way a person can look and there is no need to squeeze yourself into a mold that wasn’t made for you.
  5. Engage in Self-Care and Seek Support: Engage in self-care activities that nourish your body and mind. This can include exercise, meditation, spending time in nature, or indulging in hobbies you enjoy. Don’t be afraid to seek support from friends, family, or a therapist. Talking about your struggles with body image can help you navigate the journey toward body neutrality.

Embracing body neutrality can be a transformative journey towards self-acceptance and improved well-being. It offers a balanced perspective that allows you to appreciate your body for what it is—an incredible vessel capable of doing amazing things—without the unrealistic pressure to love it unconditionally based on appearance alone.

Remember that body neutrality is a personal journey, and it’s okay to have moments of self-doubt or struggle. Be patient with yourself and continue practicing self-acceptance. Over time, you’ll likely find that you can live a more fulfilling and joyful life by embracing body neutrality and freeing yourself from the constraints of unrealistic beauty standards.
